What it does

ShareX captures a region, a window or the whole screen, then does whatever you set up next: open the editor to annotate, copy to the clipboard, save to a folder, or upload and copy the link. It also records video or GIFs, captures long scrolling pages and can pull text out of an image.

It is free and open source, with no watermark and no account. The trade-off is a dense settings window, but the defaults are sensible, so start there and change only what bothers you.

Coming from a Mac?

Does the job of

CleanShot XShottr

Like CleanShot X, it does capture, annotation, recording and share links in one tool. Less polished, but free.

Good to know

  • Windows 11 can send the Print Screen key to Snipping Tool. Turn that off in Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard if you want ShareX to have it.
  • The first time you record video, ShareX offers to download FFmpeg, which it uses for encoding.
