What it does

Everything keeps a list of every file and folder name on your NTFS drives and updates it as files change. Type any part of a name and the results narrow with every keystroke, across every drive at once.

It searches names, not what is inside files, which is why it feels instant. Wildcards, filters and regular expressions are there when you need them, but most of the time you just type.

Spotlight also searches inside files. Everything sticks to names and is instant at it.

Good to know

  • Only NTFS drives are indexed automatically. Other drives and network folders can be added as folder indexes, which refresh on a schedule instead of instantly.
  • It runs quietly in the tray, and you can give it a global hotkey in Options so search is always one keystroke away.
